Build Day FAQ

What to Expect for Your Day on the Work site

When does the workday start?

We ask that you arrive on time to complete paper work and prepare for your workday. First, you will complete a liability waiver and sign the time sheet. We then hold a mandatory fifteen-minute meeting covering group safety, individual assignments, and instructions for the day. Work begins promptly after that. When you arrive late, you hold up the entire group.

Site & Day Arrival & Paperwork Safety Meeting & Assignments Work begins
Issaquah Highlands – weekdays 8:45a 9:00a 9:15a
Issaquah Highlands – Saturdays 9:15a 9:30a 9:45a
Renton/La Fortuna – all days 8:45a 9:00a 9:15a

How do I get to the construction site?

See directions to the work sites.

When does the day end?

Clean up and end of day is approximately 4:00 p.m.

What if it's raining?

Work goes on rain or shine, so layering is a good idea.

What if the weather is really bad?

If construction sites are closed due to inclement weather and/or road conditions you will be notified by a Habitat staff member via telephone, so please be sure to include your number when you register in the Online Volunteer Calendar. If you are volunteering with a group, the group leader will be contacted. You may also call the Habitat Office at 425.869.6007 and transfer to ext 242 for site status updates. A message will be left on the voice greeting for this extension if there are site closures. Obviously conditions can vary depending on where you live. Please volunteer at your own discretion and just leave us a message at ext. 242 if you need to cancel. Your safety is our number one priority.

Work Assignments

How will I know what to do?

The Site supervisor will present the tasks for the day and ask for volunteers for each task. Your site supervisor and/or Team Leader will ensure that you have the necessary materials and supervision to accomplish the task.

What if I don't know how to do my assignment?

The Supervisors and Team Leaders on site will teach the correct construction method and answer any questions that you may have.

What if that particular assignment or task is something I am not able to do or am fearful of?

Please feel free to speak up.  We do not want you to attempt any task that you find uncomfortable, such as working on scaffolding or using power tools.  We also don't want you doing something that could aggravate an injury, such as lifting heavy objects.  Let your Team Leader or the Site Supervisor know about your limitations and we can accommodate them.

What to Wear and Bring

What should I wear?

  • Volunteers are asked to wear appropriate work clothes. No shorts or tank tops allowed.
  • Wear weather appropriate clothing and layers; we cannot guarantee that you will be working indoors or outdoors.
  • Wear hard soled shoes or boots (no sandals or open toed shoes).
  • Bringing work gloves is highly recommended.

Should I bring any tools?

We can provide tools for all volunteers unless otherwise specified. You may bring your own tools if you wish; some people are happier with their own tools. A hammer, measuring tape and utility knife are some good basic tools to have.

What about Lunch?

Volunteers are asked to bring their own lunch and a drink to the site.  Lunch break is at noon unless otherwise specified.
