Just North of I-90 on Snoqualmie Parkway, Habitat for Humanity EKC has undertaken the largest Habitat development in the Northwest region. Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company in participation with the City of Snoqualmie has offered 10 acres of partially developed land for the construction of 50 single family homes. These homes will be incorporated into the overall design of the 4,000 plus homes being developed in Snoqualmie by five other major builders.

Thirty single family Habitat homes have been completed in Snoqualmie with others currently under construction. We have also built our first Community Center in Snoqualmie which will eventually serve the 50 families living in this Habitat community. The Community Center is adjacent to the new park and is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Featuring a small kitchen and large meeting room, it functions as a central meeting place and rental facility for large parties and activities for the community.

In 2004, we partnered with Lumbermens to complete our first of many Green builds at Snoqualmie Ridge. The home was certified at a 3 star build green rating by Master Builders Association.  BUILT GREEN homes are designed to provide homeowners with comfortable, durable, environmentally friendly homes that are cost-effective to own and operate.  These resource-efficient homes are crafted to exceed building codes and provide homeowners with years of healthy, quality living, while protecting the precious Northwest environment. Located on ½ an acre of land in the beautiful Issaquah Highlands development, this project will consist of 10 homes in 5 duplexes. The two story houses will consist of 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms all with built-in garages. The homes will range from 1000 to 1400 square feet.

Land for this project was acquired with generous support from ARCH-A Regional Coalition for Housing, the City of Issaquah, the City of Newcastle, the City of Sammamish, King County Housing Finance Program, the State of Washington Housing Trust Fund and HUD Self Help Homeownership Program.

The homes will be built in accordance with the Master Builder’s Association of King & Snohomish County Built Green Certified and Evergreen Sustainable Standard programs.

Issaquah Highlands is a new model of how to live in the Northwest, combining access to woods, trails, open space and parks with an urban-village lifestyle of convenience. Issaquah Highlands is pedestrian friendly with a network of sidewalks and trails, making it easy to walk or bike from place to place. Architecture and streetscapes are scaled for walking, with something interesting to look at and experience each step of the way.

Many neighborhoods have front porches and homes close to the sidewalk to encourage social interaction. In the Issaquah Highlands there are 650 developed acres of land, 1400 open acres of open space with an additional 100 acres of parks area (accounting for 15 individual parks.)

New Project: La Fortuna in Renton – A Collaborative Project between two Habitat for Humanity affiliates, East King County and Seattle/South King County
Construction begins in Spring of 2010

La Fortuna will provide 41 very-low-income families with both an affordable home and an affordable mortgage in a new housing development in Renton.

La Fortuna will be built in four phases from 2010—2014. The first 11 homes will be built beginning in the spring of 2010 with homebuyers moving in to their new homes in the fall of 2011.

These townhomes will be built in a total of eight buildings varying in size from three to nine units each. Environmental stewardship and long-term affordability will be ensured by constructing the townhomes to achieve or surpass Energy Star and LEED sustainable building standards.

La Fortuna is located in Renton’s Benson Heights neighborhood, off Petrovitsky Road in an area zoned Residential Multifamily. The property is vacant land within an area of residential homes built from approximately 1960 to 1970. The site is an "L"-shaped, 4.51 acre lot with a road and utilities (electricity, sanitary sewer and water) already installed. There are no buildings on the site, no structures to demolish and no tenants to relocate. Half of the site will be dedicated to open space.

La Fortuna enhances the continuum of housing in King County. Potential buyers for the La Fortuna homes will be identified by partnering with providers of transitional and supportive housing. This process will make space available in those units for families leaving emergency shelters. In this way, the La Fortuna project intentionally and proactively enriches the continuum of housing and enhances efforts to end homelessness in King County.

La Fortuna is a collaborative Habitat effort. The project will be implemented by integrating the operations of two distinct and successful affiliates. Not only does this collaboration avoid the creation of a separate affiliate organization, it will increase the capacity of each affiliate to serve more families without increasing overhead and/or the fully-loaded per-unit costs. It is envisioned that this project will inspire others in Habitat for Humanity to actively seek and implement collaborations that substantially increase capacity and community impact.
