One Roof, Many Lives
One Roof, Many Lives
There are moments when it feels like the work of Habitat for Humanity is truly blessed—and one of those moments occurred this past January 27.
It was the dedication of the third multi-unit building at our Patterson Park development in Redmond, and a crowd of people were gathered to mark this important event. The days leading up to the dedication were marked by relentless cold and freezing rain—propelled by pops of a good stiff breeze—as Construction Supervisor Mike Hammerquist and his team of volunteers and AmeriCorps members completed the three-story building in record time.
But as the ceremony started, the sun, as if on cue, broke through the clouds long enough to warm everyone present and put a glow on the gathering.
And what a gathering it was. Family Advocates joined the future homeowners at the doorway of their homes, as Keith Ferrin, Pastor of Creekside Covenant, led the blessing. It seemed as though everyone who had a hand in the house—the affiliate staff, board members, house sponsors, coalition leaders, volunteers and current homeowners—were there to celebrate the addition of six families to the Patterson Park Community.
It was more than just the weather that gave the day its extraordinary aura. The theme of the dedication was “One roof, many lives,” and the diversity of those gathered was a testament to Habitat for Humanity’s policy of inclusion and openness. Those who attended, combined with those who live in the community, reflected nearly every age group, economic level, ethnic background and religion that make up our world today. This alone was pure magic.
We post the dates of home dedications on our web site. Join us at our next one. You’ll find what Tom Granger, Executive Director of Habitat EKC, says is true: home dedications are a joyous and singular experience. As a supporter, you should get in on the joy.
